What Are Flexible Packaging Inks?

Flexible packaging includes inks, coatings, and primers printed on flexible packaging products like wrappers, packets, pouches, bags, and wraps. These printing inks enhance these packages' visual appearance and performance through high-quality graphics that withstand the product manufacturing, packaging, shipping, and consumption processes.

Types of Flexible Packaging Inks

Two primary types of flexible packaging coatings are surface print inks and lamination inks. These inks can be either water-based or solvent-based.

Surface Print Inks

Surface print inks are produced using waxes that travel to the surface of the ink film, resulting in resistance to rubbing, scuffing, and other environmental factors. It's essential that surface inks can withstand solvents, water, detergents, and other substances that come into contact with them. Surface print inks must have good gloss properties to avoid overprinting.

Lamination Inks

Unlike surface inks, lamination inks do not incorporate surface-active ingredients like wax due to their bonding interference. These inks are created by combining two or more substrates to form a resilient packaging structure that serves as a barrier for the contents inside. Lamination inks are sealed inside the lamination structure to prevent the ink surface from being exposed to external elements. However, the ink must still adhere to the surface film on which it is printed.

While they don't have gloss requirements, high bonding capabilities are necessary for lamination inks to ensure the structure remains intact after manufacturing.

Applications and Benefits of Water Resistance in Packaging Inks

Flexible packaging fast-drying inks are used for packaging products across many industries, such as the food and beverage, cosmetics, personal care, pharmaceutical, and automotive fields. Some of the many applications of cardboard packaging inks include:

  • Pillow pouches
  • Cold-sealed packaging
  • Wrappers
  • Sachets
  • Bags
  • Stand-up pouches
  • Shrink sleeves
  • Envelopes
  • Pouches
  • Flexible trays
  • Stick packs

You can find two types of printing inks for flexible packaging in our inventory — water-based inks and UV coatings. Each of these coatings has different properties and characteristics that you can choose from for your unique packaging needs.

AQ Ink & Coatings

At Magnum Inks & Coatings, we offer water-based inks for flexible packaging that sets the standard for quality and reliability. Water-based inks are an excellent alternative to solvent-based inks and provide various safety and sustainability benefits. Water-based coatings are nontoxic and odor-free, making them a safer option for flexible packaging. They also contain very few volatile organic compounds (VOCs), producing minimal atmospheric emissions. This coating is fully recyclable, so any corrugated packaging printed with water-based inks is also suitable for recycling.
We offer three types of water-based inks and coatings for flexible packaging:

  • Paper: Our water-based inks are ideal for use with flexographic ink systems for paper.
  • Film/foil: This water-based coating for film and foil exhibits excellent adhesion, water resistance, and superior run-ability.
  • Laminating: Laminating water-based coatings provide excellent adhesion and bond strength.

UV Ink & Coatings

You can also purchase flexible packaging UV inks for your printing needs. UV inks are glossy liquid coatings applied to a packaging surface before being cured with ultraviolet light, which causes the ink to harden instantaneously.

Laminating UV coatings offer many advantages over conventional solutions. For example, these inks yield a rich, shiny finish that makes deep colors like blues and blacks appear more vibrant, making them ideal for image-heavy projects. UV inks also have excellent clarity and are resistant to abrasion, protecting your packages' image integrity as they travel to their destinations.

Our UV ink products include:

  • Film/foil: Our film and foil UV inks are water-resistant and adhere reliably to packaging surfaces. They also exhibit excellent run-ability.

Low Copper Ink System

Magnum Inks & Coatings has developed a low copper ink system that helps to accommodate local compliance requirements concerning copper dispersion. We have sourced alternative pigments that allow us to match color standards without using copper-containing pigments. Our Low Copper Inks will contain <0.001% copper and match nearly any specified target.
