Understanding the GCMI Flexo Color Guide: A Crucial Tool for the Corrugated Ink Industry

Understanding GCMI Colors with the FLEXO Color Guide: A Crucial Tool for the Corrugated Ink Industry

In corrugated packaging, color consistency matters. Whether you are printing on white top or natural Kraft stock, your inks need to run clean, stay consistent, and deliver the color your customers expect. That is why the GCMI FLEXO Color Guide remains such an important resource for the corrugated ink industry. It gives printers, converters, and ink suppliers a reliable visual standard for evaluating and matching flexographic colors on the types of substrates they use every day.

What is the GCMI FLEXO Color Guide?

The GCMI FLEXO Color Guide, developed under the Glass Packaging Institute, has long served as a recognized color reference for the corrugated market. The current Edition XI FLEXO Color Guide was developed through the work of the Glass Packaging Institute’s Color Guide Subcommittee, with input from a range of industry stakeholders across the corrugated and printing supply chain.

Edition XI contains 46 colors printed on white top and natural Kraft stock. The guide includes all 42 inks from Edition X plus four additional inks, bringing the total to 46 inks per guide. All inks in the guide were tested for tolerance and consistency throughout the print run. Because of advances in printing technology and ink quality, the colors in Edition XI may appear different from previous editions.

Why is the GCMI Color Guide Important?

The GCMI FLEXO Color Guide is often compared to other color standards, but its real strength is that it is built for corrugated printing. Unlike color systems developed for coated papers or other print applications, the GCMI guide shows how inks actually appear on white top and Kraft substrates, helping to reduce guesswork when selecting or matching colors for corrugated packaging.

That matters because corrugated materials can influence how a color looks on press. A color that appears strong on one substrate may shift, mute, or warm on another. The GCMI guide gives printers and brand owners a more realistic reference point for flexographic work, especially in packaging environments where consistency from run to run is critical.

What Colors Are Included in Edition XI?

The Edition XI FLEXO Color Guide includes the following inks:

GCMI 10, 11, 13, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 38, 39, 49, 50, 52, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 80, 81, 82, 90, 91, 103, 300, 387, 388, 394, 523, 609, 970, 984, 2008, 2081, 3086, 3213, 3229, Fusion Pink, and 9002.

This updated palette gives users a dependable range of standard flexo colors while reflecting the improvements made in modern printing and ink development.
